“I Don’t’ Want to Be A Part of That American Express Gift Card”

Dear Representative:

Gift Cards are a convenient way to make purchases; however there are some underlying discriminatory issues when redeeming the gift cards at some retail outlets that can pose a serious problem for the consumer. One of our associates was is involved with a gift card matter with an Ohio Marathon gas station were he believes he experienced "profiling discrimination." The employee or owner of the gas station refused to honor an American Express gift card below are the correspondences regarding that matter.

Blake,

I apologize for the misunderstanding; I read your initial email as you
wanted to pay for gas with the cash card plus wanted an additional $4.50
in cash taken off it and provided to you. There is nothing wrong with
using two forms of payment for gasoline at any Marathon station. We
will make sure to follow up with the owner of the location to ensure
they enact in future transactions properly.

Thank you for your persistence, and again I apologize for the
misunderstanding.

Do you think the company should be liable for gas station owners or employee’s wrong doing in this matter?

In this matter it appears the customer did nothing wrong by wanting to use a gift card. The employee or manage went against company policy by not allowing the customer to use his gift card. If the company should be liable yes; Marathon should be liable because all employess, managers and station owners should be aware of any policies regarding that business.

At this stage with gas prices, Marathon will not care about that situation. However, the company should be liable for any employees actions while they are at work.
